Green Guzzlers – Driving Water Consumption Up
Huge amounts of water are used for fuel production. Green fuels like ethanol require up to 130 times more water to produce than conventional fuels.
Estimated gallons of water used to produce fuel to drive a family sedan one mile are:
Gasoline: 1
Hybrid-electric: 10
Hydrogen: 25
Ethanol: 40-130
Increased use of green fuels coupled with quickly dwindling water supply in the US will put pressure on Canadian water which is mistakenly believed to be abundant. Government policies fail to account for the deep connection between water and energy. See
