Copper water bottles – pros & cons
Friday, February 22nd, 2019Since ancient times, copper has been used to make vessels because of its attractive colour and sheen or patina, its malleability, its anti-bacterial qualities, and its ability to conduct heat.
Copper accessories have become fashionable in recent years, including water bottles made out of this beautiful, soft metal.
watermatters has not embraced this trend for water bottles. Here’s why.
Importance of copper to zinc ratio for health
COPPER is a trace mineral present in all bodily tissues and essential to our health. It competes with an equally essential trace element, ZINC, for binding sites in our organs and cells. Well-being (including brain health) depends upon a proper balance between these two ‘antagonistic’ minerals.
Problematic, elevated copper levels are common
Over the years, many customers have come into our store seeking remediation for elevated copper levels in their body. Copper water pipes may be contributing to this phenomenon. Due to its soft and reactive properties, copper is easily transmitted into water, especially soft water such as ours here in Metro Vancouver.
Drinking water from a copper bottle could aggravate this common imbalance.
Beverage & food toxicity from copper vessels
Copper reacts with acidic foods and beverages resulting in toxicity. Dairy, citrus, vinegar-based foods should never come in contact with copper.
How pure is the copper?
The appeal of copper is partly because of its association with life in slower, olden times when vessels were fashioned by hand. 100 years ago copper available for this purpose would not have been exposed to the industrial pollutants that currently prevail in our world. Today, virtually all copper is recycled – often from electrical components, plumbing pipes and automobile radiators. Steel is also recycled however impurities are easily removed during the recycling process using powerful magnets. Copper does not respond to magnetism.
