Stainless Steel Water Bottles - your alternative to plastic

Drinking water out of plastic water bottles can be hazardous to your health. Plastics leach toxic chemicals into your water and the environment.

According to new research re-usable plastic bottles, made of polycarbonate plastic, may be exposing you to unhealthy doses of a chemical called Bisphenol-A.

Bisphenol-A is an endocrine disrupting chemical that mimics estrogen. Its ability to disrupt hormones is linked to cancer, miscarriage, and birth defects that include Down’s Syndrome.

Even very low levels of Bisphenol-A, including those well below the current regulatory safety threshold, have been shown to affect prostate development, promote prostate tumors, affect breast tissue development and sperm counts, and even possibly create and enlarge fat cells.

What’s more, plastic water bottles are not environmentally friendly. They are one of the fastest growing forms of municipal waste.

Stainless steel water bottles are an ideal alternative to plastic water bottles.

FAQs about Stainless Steel Water Bottles

Do all the lids fit all the bottles?

Yes, the lids are interchangeable with all size bottles.

How do I clean my stainless steel bottle?

Pour boiling water into your bottle and let stand 15 minutes. Beware that the bottle will be extremely hot.
Alternatively, clean mild soap and a bottle-brush or with vinegar and baking soda.
Rinse really well.
It is also safe to wash the bottle itself in a dishwasher.
It is not advisable to wash the lids in a dishwasher. Water temperatures are too hot for plastic lids. Water can get forced
inside the stainless steel lids.
Handwash the lid with mild soap and warm water or vinegar and baking soda. Be sure to rinse well.

Will the bottle keep liquids hot or cold?

No, the bottles do not act like a thermos. The purpose of the stainless steel is to protect you from exposure to plastics.

Which size bottle should I choose?

The 18 and 27oz sizes fit in most drink holders. Women and children find them most comfortable in their hand. Men seem to favour the 40oz size.

Which style of lid should I choose?

All bottles now come with lids made from non-toxic, non-leaching polypropylene #5 plastic.
The Flat cap is the most compact choice. The Loop cap is the most popular choice.
If you are used to drinking on the go from a nipple-style bottle, you may prefer the Sports cap.
Or, try one of each and interchange them!

How safe is polypropene #5 plastic?

Based on current knowledge, polypropylene is one of the safest plastics. It is not known to leach any cancer-causing or hormone-disrupting chemicals. It’s not made with chlorine and so doesn’t produce dioxin when it’s produced or incinerated.

Do the bottles leak?

Bottles with the Loop cap and Flat cap do not leak.
The Sports cap has a small air valve to allow air into the bottle (because you can’t squeeze a stainless steel bottle). Water may leak out of the valve.

Where are the bottles made?

They are made in China. We are well aware of the growing concern about goods made in China. Significant effort has been made to ensure that high quality materials and ethical working conditions are maintained in the manufacturing process.
Unfortunately, Canada has just sold its last steel mill. Canadian steel fabricators are not oriented to the production of this type of seamless container and certainly not at a price affordable to the average consumer.

What is stainless steel made of?

Stainless steel is an iron-containing alloy made from some of the basic elements found on earth: iron ore, chromium, silicon, nickel, carbon, nitrogen and manganese.

What’s so good about stainless steel?

Stainless steel is strong, durable, easy to clean, sanitary and inert (doesn’t react with what is put in it). It also doesn’t rust and resists staining. That’s why it is used to make pots and pans, eating utensils and surgical implants.

What grade of stainless steel is used for making the bottles?

The bottles are constructed from high quality sanitary grade 304 stainless steel which has a low nickel content. This grade is used in the food processing, dairy and brewery industries.

Is it safe to put acidic beverages in my stainless steel bottle?

Food grade stainless steel will not react with acidic drinks.

Why is stainless steel better that aluminum?

Although light weight, aluminum has to be lined with something to make sure the contents are safe for drinking. Usually it is lined with baked on epoxy (toxic) or ceramic (can crack or leach aluminum at higher temperatures or with fizzy drinks).
